“Amsterdamnified!” is a research project based in Canada (UNB-Fredericton and Brock University) with European partners. For the period from 2015 to 2020 the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is providing funding. The full title of the project is “Religious Dissenters, Spiritualist Ideas and Urban Associationalism in the Emergence of the Early Enlightenment in England and the Low Countries, 1540-1700.” In 2014, I was a research assistant for the project, compiling an annotated bibliography on the early Enlightenment, the history of science, religious heterodoxy, and related themes. I also had the pleasure of learning about the 1641 pamphlet, Religion’s Enemies, by the English poet John Taylor, which includes the neologism “Amsterdamnified!”
